Granbury Quilters Guild meets on the 3rd Monday of the month at St. Frances Catholic Church on Acton Hwy in Granbury. The meeting starts at 6:30 pm with a social and 7:00 starts the meeting. It includes show and tell ,quilt displays, and usually a guest speaker.
The Granbury Quilter's Guild was conceived in 1997 by Jeriann Sharkey, Donna Gudat, Lee Rash and Liz Berry. They realized a need for the group in Hood County after driving to Cleburne for over 2 years. In January, flyers were passed out and left at material and sewing places . The first meeting was held at the library, When several ladies were interested, the organization of quilters was started in March 1997.
A letter from "The Friends of the Library " asked for a quilt to be made with the history of Hood County to be displayed at the library. The late Dr. Susan Stumbaugh (President 2001) led a committee in creating such a quilt and it now hangs in the office of County Judge Rash. It has traveled to several quilt shows, including Paducah Quilt Show, where it received Honorable mention. Also Dr. Susan Stumbaugh designed our Quilt Guild emblem/pin, in the shape of Hood County.
Each year we commit to a service project and so far have made quilts for all the nursing homes in Granbury, baby quilts for the neonatal department at Harris Hospital, knitted caps, booties, mittens and covers for premature babies at Parkland Hospital, Dallas, baby quilts for the Brazos Pregnancy Clinic, donation quilt for their live auction benefiting the Brazos Pregnancy Clinic, goodie boxes for Christmas at Mission Granbury. 32 handmade quilts were donated to Mission Granbury at the opening of the Ada Carey Women and children's Shelter.
Our first quilt show was in 1999 on the square in the Hooks Real estate building. We have since had one every 2 years for a total of 5.
We have work shops with nationally recognized quilters incuding Jodi Barrows, Irma Gail Hatcher, Billie Lauder, and Debby Maddy.
In 2006 we had our first guild retreat at Compass Centre and had one also in Sept 2007. Hopefully, this will be an annual event.
